CHARACTER INTERVIEW
Location: White House basement, Washington DC
Date: October 2011
Interviewer: AD Starrling
Character: Conrad Greene, main protagonist of Greene’s Calling, the third novel in the award-winning supernatural thriller series Seventeen
AD: Hey Conrad. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me.
Conrad: No problem.
AD: *glances around the soundproof room* First off, sorry for landing you in this mess.
Conrad: *smiles wryly* It’s okay. My past was going to catch up with me sometime anyway.
AD: I have some questions from fans of the series.
Conrad: Fire away.
AD: When and where were you born?
Conrad: 1550. Hamburg, Germany.
AD: Where have you lived since?
Conrad: *leans back in his chair* Here and there. Europe mainly.
AD: Where do you call home?
Conrad: *faint smile flashes on his lips* Home is currently a swamp in the Amazon rainforest, just outside Alvarães.
AD: How long have you been there?
Conrad: Some sixty years.
AD: And you ended up there how?
Conrad: *shrugs* Let’s just say I grew tired of the company of men and immortals alike.
AD: Do you live alone?
Conrad: I have a dog. His name is Rocky. He’s a mixed German shepherd.
AD: Tell us about your birthmark.
Conrad: *glances at his left forearm* There’s not much to tell. It’s an Aesculapian snake.
AD: Is it hereditary?
Conrad: No. I’m in the only one in my family who has it.
AD: Do you know its significance?
Conrad: No. *pauses and pins me with a gray-blue stare* Is there something you’re not telling me? *gaze shifts from me to his birthmark and back again*
AD: *smiles weakly* Hmm. Maybe. Moving on, what is it that you dislike the most in others?
Conrad: *frowns* Liars.
AD: *shifts in chair and grimaces* Oh. What about your greatest regret?
Conrad: My greatest regret? *painful expression darts in his eyes* That I couldn’t save someone I cared deeply about.
AD: What is your most treasured possession?
Conrad: My staff weapon.
AD:Your greatest achievement?
Conrad: *rubs chin* Well, I guess it would be stopping the sabotage of the Treaty of the Union, in 1706.
AD: What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Conrad: *gaze drops to his hands* Being with the one I love.
AD: What is your greatest fear?
Conrad: That I will go to my grave knowing I was never forgiven for the sin that I committed.
AD: What do you most value in your friends?
Conrad: Loyalty.
AD: Do you have a secret?
Conrad: *grins* Don’t we all?
AD: How would you like to die?
Conrad: Peacefully, in my sleep, with my loved ones at my side.
AD: What is your motto?
Conrad: Be prepared for anything.
*Door opens. A man in a dark suit walks in and hands a sheet to Greene before leaving*
AD: Is everything okay?
Conrad: *studies the data on the paper with narrowed eyes* I’m afraid I have to cut this interview short. My presence is needed elsewhere.
AD: Sure. *hesitates* Er, watch out for psychotic brunettes with gray eyes.
Conrad: *pauses in doorway* What psychotic brunette?
*Male voice calls out Greene’s name from outside the room*
Conrad: Yeah, I’m coming. *frowns at me before glancing at the dark suited man standing in the corridor* Escort her out of the building.
AD: Goodbye! Be careful.
Conrad: *nods curtly*
