GUEST POST: Psychology and Writing, by Krys Fenner

The short answer is yes, my background in psychology helps in writing. I believe it assists with general writing and most importantly with the particular genre I have chosen to write. First and foremost, it gives me what I need to create believable characters who have opposing views even on controversial topics. Secondly it helps me get inside the mind of protagonist and appropriately describe their actions in order to display their psychological issues.

As I’ve said before, each book touches on a primary social issue that have in recent years become topics of interest. Destroyed addressed the varying point-of-views with rape as its main theme. Punished not only continues that discussion, but also rolls into thoughts on suicide as its targeted issue. My background in psychology helped me portray the accuracy of the person considering suicide, as well as the thoughts people have about it.

For example, there are people who believe suicide is the coward’s way out. There are those who consider suicide… heroic. And there are others who understand that people who have attempted/committed suicide simply see it as a way out. A way to escape the never-ending pain. Now, my personal experience carried a great deal into how I wrote about this particular topic from Bella’s point-of-view. Other characters in the novel see it a bit differently and their thoughts are just barely scratched. There is enough in the story to give you the idea of how they think with my view being openly displayed through the characters.

Punished covers more than just suicide. In Destroyed, Bella had a lot of horrible things happen and they don’t end. The story picks up a few weeks after she has been released from the hospital. When writing Punished, I had to consider the PTSD Bella suffered and her drug addiction. Seeing as her father is a mental health counselor, this was something else I had to think about too. In particular what I wanted to tackle was the instances where these two can appear similar and still be distinguished. My background in Psychology certainly assisted with the scenes where the two had to be noticeable.

Good writers can get into the mindset of several characters in one book, but when you’re writing a story that has to include psychological problems, a background in psychology doesn’t hurt. Personally, I find it makes things a little bit more honest. And that’s just the way I like it.
